Bernese or "Berner" Background

The breed originates from Bern, Switzerland where they were bred for working on the farm as well as pulling milk wagons. As such, it is their heritage to want to work and they are sturdy, hearty dogs. Bernese Mountian Dogs are very intelligent and easily trained. They are loyal to their family, but friendly with others. They will issue a warning bark, but are not aggressive. They are affectionate and laid back. Their size can be from 70 lbs. to 120 lbs. Bernese are tri-colored with a double black coat, rust or tan over each eye as well as on their cheeks, each side of their chest, on their legs and under their tail.  A pretty white blaze, white around their muzzle, on their paws, tip of the tail, and an inverted white cross on their chest are also trademarks. Their life span is from 7 to 13 years, depending on possible health issues, including cancer, hip and elbow dysplasia and eye disease. The cost of a Bernese Mountain Dog ranges from $1500 to $2. For more information see The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America's web page at  http://www.bmdca.org
